Wellspring Niagara, is a single storey 11, 000 square feet new cancer support facility designed to make patients feel welcome and at home. Completed in 2019, the facility was completely funded by community donations and includes 9 offices, a reiki room, wig salon, teaching kitchen, library, and exercise and yoga rooms. The main design consideration was providing a space with a residential aesthetic while still offering enough space for the more than 40 support programmes run by Wellspring. Working closely with the client RAAI has taken great care in choosing exterior as well as interior finishes and materials that resemble a ‘home’ with comfort and openness. The design of the building is based on the Well Building Standard and incorporates many of its principles from low environmentally conscious materials to pleasing views and ample daylighting. Exterior finishes are a combination of brick and stone masonry, board and batten PVC siding and a metal roof.
