Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
The state-of-the-art 2,500 square foot Teaching Distillery at Niagara College's Niagara-on-the-Lake campus is Canada's first, completed in 2018. Located adjacent to the College's Wine Visitor + Education Centre that RAAI also designed, the building features five stills, four mash tuns and ten fermenters that allow for on-site production of a wide variety of distilled products.
The design idea was to keep the built form pure and simple, an orthogonal box that would display, incubate and be demonstrative in nature, it would express, be sympathetic to its context; it's sister, the Winery to the East in choice of materials and finishes; be inviting and visible in purpose and siting, transparency via large exterior glazing.
A great deal of care was also taken to organize the equipment and services, the Stills, Mash Tuns and Fermenters in order to provide an organized and balanced environment that would enhance the teaching and learning experience for students within Canada's first Artisan Distilling Program.
The building has been a welcomed addition to Niagara College's building stock and their new Artisan Distilling Program.
