Welland, Ontario
Completed in 2004, this addition and renovation to the main entrance of Eastdale Secondary School in Welland was designed to create a new image as well as a much needed lobby. The design incorporated brick veneer and metal panels to match the adjacent finishes and the gentle arc of the curved colonnade was designed to create a welcoming entrance as well as tie the two corners of the existing building together. Where the 2,520 square foot addition is attached to the school, all the old exterior walls were removed, and the main office was re-oriented to allow for the entire lobby to be viewed from the office. The bright lobby has a three tiered ceiling to create the feeling of more space, and a sunken gathering space, for students to use for lounging or studying. An exterior courtyard was created on either side of the entrance for students to transform into garden areas and allow them to take pride in their school.
